If you’re planning a trip to Spain—whether for tourism, visiting family, or business—there’s an important requirement you should know about: you must prove that you have a minimum amount of money to be allowed entry. This is part of Spain’s official entry requirements, recently updated in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
⏺️ What is the minimum amount required to enter Spain?
According to the current regulations, all non-EU travellers entering Spain must prove they have:
- €118.40 per day for the duration of their stay, and
- A minimum of €1,065.60, even if staying for just a few days.
This means that even if your visit is short, you still need to show proof of having at least €1,065.60 per person.
⏺️ Do I also need a return ticket?
Yes. In addition to showing sufficient funds, you must also present a return or onward travel ticket. This ticket must be:
- Personal
- Non-transferable
- With a fixed date
An open or unconfirmed reservation is not accepted.
⏺️ How can I prove I have sufficient funds?
You can present:
- Cash
- Certified checks or traveller’s checks
- Credit card, accompanied by a recent bank statement or an updated savings book
🚨 Note: Online banking printouts or bank letters are not accepted. Only official and up-to-date documents are valid.
⏺️ Who needs to meet these requirements?
This applies to third-country nationals (non-Schengen countries) entering Spain via airports, ports, or land borders. Even if you do not require a visa, border police may ask for proof of funds. If you cannot provide it, you may be denied entry.
