Although processing times for student residence authorization renewals can vary significantly between Spanish Immigration Offices, we recently obtained a favorable decision in just one month from the date the application was submitted.
However, the most interesting aspect of this case was not the speed of the decision itself, but the planning and coordination that took place beforehand, allowing us to submit a complete application from the very beginning.
In this particular case, it was necessary to coordinate the collection of supporting documents, submit the renewal application before the student traveled abroad, obtain a return authorization (Autorización de Regreso, in Spanish), and properly document every legal requirement. This approach helped avoid additional requests for documentation and facilitated a smooth review by the Spanish Immigration Office.

⏺️ Coordinating the application and the return authorization
One of the main challenges in this case was coordinating every step of the process with the student.
The renewal application had to be submitted before the student traveled abroad while, at the same time, obtaining a Return Authorization that would allow the student to leave Spain and return while the renewal application remained pending.
This required organizing the collection of supporting documents, obtaining all necessary signatures, filing the renewal application, and subsequently applying for the return authorization within a very limited timeframe, all while complying with the student’s travel schedule.
Careful planning ensured that each step was completed successfully without affecting either the trip or the renewal process.

⏺️ The importance of properly documenting financial means
Another key aspect of this application was demonstrating sufficient financial means.
Although Spanish immigration regulations establish minimum financial requirements, the way financial documentation is presented and organized can often make a significant difference. In many cases, it is not simply a question of proving that a certain amount of money is available, but of presenting clear, consistent, and easily verifiable evidence for the Immigration Office.
Depending on the circumstances, financial means may be demonstrated through several different types of documentation, including:
- Bank certificates showing that the student has sufficient available funds.
- Regular income derived from employment or self-employment, where compatible with the student residence authorization.
- Scholarships or financial aid awarded by public institutions or private organizations.
- Documentation demonstrating that a family member will financially support the student throughout their stay in Spain.
The last option frequently presents additional challenges when the sponsoring family member resides outside Spain.
In these situations, a simple bank statement is often insufficient. It is generally advisable to include a formal financial support letter or declaration, together with documentation proving the family relationship, evidence of the sponsor’s financial capacity, and, where applicable, the appropriate legalization or Apostille together with an official Spanish translation of foreign public documents.
In the case discussed in this article, one of the most important aspects of our work was carefully organizing the financial documentation provided by the family member living abroad so that the student’s financial resources were clearly demonstrated from the outset. This allowed the application to be approved without any requests for additional documentation during the process.
