Today, 22 October 2025, marks the end of the period to apply for Spanish citizenship under the Democratic Memory Law (LMD), approved in October 2022. During the three years the law has been in force, thousands of descendants of Spaniards abroad have been able to apply for Spanish nationality, thus reconnecting with their family and cultural roots.
Since its entry into force, the so-called “Law of Grandchildren” has represented a historic opportunity for those who could prove their Spanish ancestry and met the requirements set out in the Eighth Additional Provision of the DML. However, the end of the deadline does not mean the process is over for many applicants.
⏺️ The search for supporting documents continues
Although the official submission period ends today, many people who managed to register their application in time are still in the process of gathering the necessary documents to prove their Spanish origin — birth certificates, baptismal records, or civil registry extracts proving their ancestors’ Spanish nationality.
💡 At ARC Legal Abogados, we assist our clients in locating and obtaining these documents from Civil Registries, parishes, dioceses, and historical archives across Spain. Our goal is to ensure that applicants can complete their file properly and submit all required documentation in their citizenship application folder.

⏺️ A process that will continue over the coming months
The end of the application period does not stop the processing of already submitted cases. Consular offices and the Ministry of Justice will continue reviewing applications in the coming months. In many cases, additional documents or clarifications will be required before a final resolution is issued, so it is essential to keep contact details up to date and respond promptly to any administrative requests.
The experience gained over these three years has shown the importance of careful and thorough document preparation, especially in cases where proof of family ties depends on ecclesiastical records or certificates issued abroad.
⏺️ A symbolic closure with a spirit of continuity
The closure of the Democratic Memory Law marks the end of a significant chapter but also opens the door to reflecting on possible future legislative avenues to continue recognising Spanish nationality for descendants of emigrants. The social and emotional impact of this law has been profound — restoring nationality to thousands of families and strengthening the ties between Spain and its diaspora.
At ARC Legal Abogados, we help those who dream of starting a new life in Spain. We accompany each person and family throughout their immigration journey, with the trust and empathy of those who have also experienced the process of settling in a new country.
