The European Union continues to be one of the world’s main destinations for international migration. According to the latest data published by Eurostat, more than 4.2 million people moved to the European Union from non-EU countries in 2024.
The report, recently released by the European statistical office, provides a clear snapshot of the scale of migration flows toward Europe and confirms the growing interest among people from around the world in living, studying, or working in Europe.
In addition to arrivals from third countries, mobility within the European Union itself also remains significant. During the same period analyzed by Eurostat, around 1.5 million people moved between different EU Member States, reflecting the importance of free movement within the single market.
It should be noted that these figures do not include asylum seekers or individuals displaced from Ukraine under the temporary protection regime. As a result, the total number of people arriving in Europe during that period may be considerably higher.
⏺️ Europe continues to be an attractive destination for professionals, students, and families
The data published by Eurostat confirms a trend that has been present for several years: Europe remains one of the most attractive destinations for individuals seeking new professional, educational, or personal opportunities.
Some of the key factors explaining this interest include:
- legal and economic stability
- access to high-quality education systems
- opportunities to work or start a business in established economies
- mobility within the Schengen Area
In this context, an increasing number of citizens from third countries are exploring the different legal pathways available to relocate to Europe.
⏺️ Spain: one of the main destinations for international migration within the EU
Within the European Union, Spain has established itself as one of the countries receiving a significant number of nationals from outside the EU.
Factors such as quality of life, the dynamism of certain sectors of the labor market, and the country’s appeal for international students and remote workers have contributed to this trend.
In addition, Spain has introduced several reforms to its immigration framework in recent years to adapt to new forms of international mobility. Among these reforms is the Immigration Regulation approved through Royal Decree 1155/2024, which introduces important changes regarding residence permits, work authorizations, and student stays.
⏺️ Are you considering relocating to Spain?
Every year, thousands of foreign nationals decide to begin a new personal or professional chapter in Spain. Depending on each applicant’s circumstances, there are different legal pathways available to obtain a residence authorization.
Some of the most common options include:
- Student stay authorization
- Non-lucrative residence visa
- Digital nomad residence
- EU Blue Card for highly qualified professionals
- Work permits for employees or self-employed professionals
