New Directive reinstates validity of expired Venezuelan passports for immigration procedures

By ARC Legal Published on: January 16, 2025

In a significant step for the Venezuelan community residing in Spain, the General Directorate of Migration Management and the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders have issued a new directive that revokes the previous regulation of November 19, 2024. This change reinstates the validity of expired Venezuelan passports for a wide range of immigration procedures within Spanish territory.

Below, we provide an overview of the new directive (in Spanish):

What does this change mean?

The new directive establishes that expired passports of Venezuelan nationals will be accepted for:

  • Processing authorizations and permits regulated under immigration law.
  • Issuance and delivery of the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE).

This recognition restores the ability of thousands of individuals to effectively manage their residence documents and other administrative processes that require valid documentation.

Impact on the Venezuelan community

This decision represents significant relief for Venezuelan nationals who have faced challenges due to the inability to renew their passports abroad. This measure removes barriers that previously hindered:

  • The continuity of residence authorizations.
  • Obtaining essential permits for studying, working, or legally residing in Spain.
  • The issuance of documents necessary to prove their immigration status.
