The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published Royal Decree 1194/2025 of 26 December, establishing the Consulate General of Spain in Bangalore, in the Republic of India. This decision responds to the sustained increase in Spain’s presence in the country, the growth of economic exchanges between both countries, and the sharp rise in visa applications submitted by Indian nationals pasted.
⏺️ Why has a new Consulate General been created in India?
According to the Royal Decree itself, relations between Spain and India have intensified significantly in recent years. This trend has resulted in:
- A growing number of Spanish citizens residing, working or temporarily staying in India.
- A notable increase in Indian nationals travelling to Spain for tourism, professional or business purposes.
- A substantial rise in the number of visas processed by Spanish consular offices in India, which has tripled since 2011, exceeding 100,000 applications in 2024.
Until now, Spain operated only one Consulate General in Mumbai, in addition to the Consular Section of the Embassy in New Delhi. The creation of the Consulate General in Bangalore strengthens Spain’s consular network and improves access to services in a region with high population density and economic activity.

⏺️ Consular jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Spain in Bangalore
The new Consulate General will have jurisdiction over the following territories, which were previously under the authority of the Consulate General in Mumbai:
- Andhra Pradesh
- Karnataka
- Kerala
- Tamil Nadu
- The Union Territory of Puducherry
These territories represent a population of approximately 233 million people, almost one fifth of India’s total population. Following this reorganisation, the Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai will retain jurisdiction over other States and territories, while the Consular Section of the Embassy in New Delhi will maintain its current demarcation.
⏺️ Bangalore as a strategic hub for Spain
Bangalore is one of India’s leading technological and business centres. It hosts prestigious educational and research institutions, as well as major companies operating in sectors such as software, engineering, telecommunications, aerospace and defence.
In recent years, the number of Spanish companies established in the city has increased considerably. This has been accompanied by a growing Spanish resident community and, consequently, greater consular needs. The rise in Spanish tourism and cooperation activities in southern India further reinforces the demand for closer and more efficient consular assistance.
⏺️ Impact on visa processing and consular services
One of the most significant effects of opening the Consulate General of Spain in Bangalore will be the reinforcement of Spain’s visa processing capacity in India. Bangalore is currently one of the main Indian cities sending tourists to Europe and shows strong demand for visas linked to business and commercial activities with Spain.
The new consular office will allow for a more balanced distribution of applications between New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, improving efficiency, reducing administrative pressure and enhancing service for both Spanish citizens and Indian visa applicants.
⏺️ Entry into force
Royal Decree 1194/2025 provides that the Consulate General of Spain in Bangalore will enter into force the day after its publication in the Official State Gazette. The regulation does not entail an increase in public expenditure, as the costs of opening and operating the new Consulate will be covered by existing budgetary allocations of the Spanish Foreign Service pasted.
