Spain – Honduras Agreement: Recognition and Exchange of Driving Licenses

By ARC Legal Published on: October 10, 2024

On October 9th, the BOE published the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Honduras, which establishes the reciprocal recognition and exchange of national driving licenses between both countries, significantly simplifying the procedures for citizens residing in either of the two states.

The agreement allows holders of valid and current driving licenses issued by the authorities of one of the countries to drive temporarily in the other, provided they meet the minimum age requirement. After a period determined by national legislation, those who establish legal residence in the other country may exchange their license without the need to take theoretical or practical tests.

This agreement is particularly relevant for Honduran citizens residing in Spain and Spanish citizens in Honduras, who will benefit from a more streamlined and efficient process to validate their driving licenses. All licenses issued before the agreement comes into force may be exchanged, while those issued afterward must have been granted in the country of the applicant’s legal residence.

This agreement, which will enter into force on November 26, 2024, strengthens the ties between Spain and Honduras, providing a practical solution for citizens’ mobility and facilitating their integration into the country of residence.
