Welcome to Spain: Ready for your initial paperwork?

By ARC Legal Published on: January 09, 2025

If you have recently arrived in Spain with a student stay visa or a residence permit, welcome! This article provides a clear guide to the essential procedures to help you start your life in Spain smoothly and without complications.

Registering in Your City of Residence (Empadronamiento)

Registering your residence (empadronamiento) is the first and one of the most important steps to take upon arrival in Spain. This registration confirms your residence in a municipality and is required to access many public services. It is also crucial for future immigration-related procedures, as empadronamiento serves as proof of how long you have lived in Spain.

This process is managed at the town hall of the municipality where you will reside. Each municipality has its own rules regarding the required documents and the application process, which can be completed either in person or online. To register, you will need to present your passport and a document that proves your residence in the area (rental contract, property deed, or authorization from the property owner).

At ARC Legal, we handle the empadronamiento process for you, saving you time and effort in finding appointments, filling out forms, and navigating Spanish bureaucracy.

Applying for the TIE (Foreigner’s Identity Card)

The TIE is the document that confirms your legal status in Spain and is essential for activities such as opening a bank account or signing a work contract. You have one month from your arrival in Spain or from the date your residence permit is granted or becomes effective to submit your application at the Immigration Office or Police Station.

To apply for the TIE, you will need:

  • Passport
  • Visa or residence permit approval document
  • Certificate of empadronamiento
  • Proof of appointment confirmation (schedule your appointment via the Ministry of the Interior’s website)
  • Passport-sized photo (following Spanish regulations)
  • Proof of payment for the corresponding fee (Form 790, Code 012)

We recommend being patient, as obtaining an appointment can take time due to high demand, the limited number of daily slots, and issues with the online appointment system. If you are approaching the one-month deadline without securing an appointment, don’t worry—immigration officials are aware of the difficulties in getting one.

At ARC Legal, we handle appointment scheduling for all our clients to minimize delays in their procedures. If you would like us to manage and book your appointments with the Police Station, do not hesitate to contact us.

Opening a Bank Account

Opening a bank account in Spain is essential for managing your day-to-day finances. Each bank has its own requirements and conditions for opening an account. At ARC Legal, we can handle the application process and initiate account opening procedures even before your arrival in Spain, so you can focus on settling in.
