La Oficina de Asilo y Refugio (Asylum and Refuge Office), under the Ministry of the Interior, has published the statistical updates for August 2025 regarding international protection and temporary protection. These figures provide a clear picture of the evolution of migration flows and the response capacity of the Spanish asylum system.
In a context marked by international instability and the need for protection derived from conflicts, humanitarian crises and persecution, Spain continues to play a key role within the European Union as a host country.
⏺️ International Protection: Applications on the rise
Between 1 January and 31 August 2025, Spain registered a total of 97,008 applications for international protection.
The main countries of origin of applicants were:
- Venezuela: 56,738 applications
- Colombia: 10,838 applications
- Mali: 9,578 applications
- Senegal: 2,768 applications
- Peru: 2,732 applications
The predominance of Venezuela and Colombia confirms the trend of recent years, with Latin America as the main region of origin. In addition, African countries such as Mali and Senegal reflect the persistence of arrivals from the Sahel and West Africa.
Applications were lodged in different locations:
- 1,323 through embassies (family extension requests)
- 91,553 within Spanish territory
- 3,598 at border posts
- 534 in immigration detention centers (CIEs)
⏺️ Regional Distribution
Applications were concentrated in the main host communities:
- Community of Madrid: 28,101 applications
- Andalucia: 13,931 applications
- Cataluña: 11,163 applications
- Basque Country: 5,148 applications
- Canary Islands: 5,068 applications
This distribution highlights the pressure on major urban centers and entry territories, which must cope with a growing demand for reception resources and administrative processing.
⏺️ Resolution Proposals: Recognition and Protection Rates
In the first eight months of 2025, the recognition rate (refugee status or subsidiary protection) stood at 10.17%, while the broader protection rate (including humanitarian residence permits) reached 47.04%.
This means that although strict recognition as refugee or subsidiary protection remains relatively low, a significant proportion of applicants do obtain some form of protection in Spain, mainly for humanitarian reasons.
⏺️ Temporary Protection: Resolutions in August 2025
In August 2025 alone, 2,102 temporary protection resolutions were issued across Spain.
The autonomous communities with the highest number of resolutions were:
- Community of Madrid: 585 resolutions
- Comunidad Valenciana: 519 resolutions
- Cataluña: 294 resolutions
- Andalucia: 288 resolutions
At the provincial level, Madrid (585), Alicante (347) and Barcelona (176) stood out, confirming the concentration of temporary protection in urban and coastal areas with greater hosting capacity and established migrant communities
