The Ministry of the Interior has extended the temporary reintroduction of border controls in Spain for persons arriving from Italy until 22 September 2026.
The measure was adopted through Order INT/932/2026, of 4 September, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on 5 September 2026. Below, you can consult the Order approving this extension.
⏺️ Border controls extended until 22 September
As we previously reported, last August Spain temporarily reintroduced controls at its internal air and sea borders for passenger flights and maritime connections arriving from Italy.
Initially, these controls were due to remain in place from 8 August until 7 September 2026.
However, the Ministry of the Interior considers that the urgent circumstances and serious threat to public policy and internal security that originally justified the measure continue to exist. For this reason, the controls have been extended for an additional 15 days.
The controls will therefore remain in place from 00:00 on 8 September until 24:00 on 22 September 2026.
⏺️ Could the controls be extended again?
The Order establishes that the measure will be subject to ongoing assessment and may be lifted before 22 September if the circumstances that justified its introduction cease to exist.
The extension cannot be made automatically. If Spain decides to maintain the controls beyond 22 September, a new reasoned decision will be required, based on an updated assessment of the necessity and proportionality of the measure.
For the time being, travelers arriving in Spain from Italy by air or sea should therefore be aware that these border controls will remain in force until 22 September 2026.
