On 5 November 2025, Algeria deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, better known as the 1961 Apostille Convention.
With this accession, the Convention now counts 128 Contracting States. It will enter into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026.

This marks an important development in the field of international documentation. The accession will simplify the validation of Algerian public documents abroad, removing the need for consular or diplomatic legalization and replacing it with a single apostille issued by the competent authorities in Algeria.

It is worth noting that Algeria is not yet a Member of the HCCH (Hague Conference on Private International Law), and this is the first HCCH instrument to which it has acceded, making Algeria the 159th State connected to the work of the Organisation.
