Return Authorization for the Christmas Holidays: What it is and how to request it (updated 2025)

⏺️ What is a return authorization?

The return authorization — commonly known as a “regreso permit” — is a document issued by the Spanish National Police that allows you to leave Spain and re-enter without a visa while your residence documentation is being renewed or replaced (for instance, if you’ve renewed your residence and haven’t received your new card yet, or if your TIE was lost or stolen and you’re waiting for a duplicate).

Its purpose is to ensure that a temporary trip abroad does not negatively affect your immigration status in Spain.

⏺️ Who can apply for a return authorization?

Not everyone needs a return authorization, but it is essential for foreigners who fall into one of the following categories and plan to travel outside the European Union in the coming weeks or months:

Individuals who have submitted a renewal of their residence or stay permit and whose application is still being processed.
Holders of a valid TIE who have requested a duplicate due to theft, loss, damage, or deterioration (a police report must be provided in cases of theft or loss).
Individuals whose initial residence or stay permit has been approved but who have not yet received their TIE.

⏺️ Where to apply for a return authorization

Applications must be submitted to the National Police, specifically at the immigration documentation units responsible for issuing residence cards. It is an in-person procedure and requires a prior appointment. During holiday periods, appointment availability can be limited, so it’s advisable to schedule the application several weeks in advance to avoid last-minute problems.

Obtaining a return authorization is a straightforward process, but it’s important to follow the correct order and have all documents ready:

Gather all required documentation.
Book an appointment at the designated National Police station in your province (“Autorización de regreso”).
Pay the administrative fee and keep the receipt.
Attend your appointment with all documents.
The authorization is issued on paper, showing your details and its validity period. Double-check the dates and passport number before leaving.

The return authorization is valid for a limited period, usually 90 days, so it’s essential to plan your trip within those dates. Avoid traveling outside the indicated period, as you might face difficulties returning to Spain.

⏺️ Important limitations when traveling with a return authorization

Although this document allows you to re-enter Spain, it does not authorize travel within the Schengen area, nor does it replace an international visa. Its validity is exclusively for returning to Spanish territory from abroad.

Therefore, you should avoid transits or layovers in other Schengen countries, as their authorities may deny your entry or boarding. If a direct flight to Spain is not available, consult the airline or the relevant consulate before traveling. The return authorization is recognized only by Spain and has no international validity.

During the holiday season, it’s common for appointments to be fully booked. In these cases, it’s best to plan ahead and explore all possible alternatives.

Some police stations allow urgent processing if you can clearly justify the reason for your trip (for example, flight tickets, medical reports, or academic summons). If this applies to you, prepare all documents in advance and explain your situation clearly. In any case, avoid leaving Spain without a return authorization if your residence card is expired or pending renewal.
